Former site of Shui Wan School (Foc Tac Temple at Rua do Almirante Sérgio)

Foc Tac Temple at Rua do Almirante Sérgio was built in 1868 and is dedicated to Tou Tei (Earth God), one of the most popular deities in Chinese folk religion. Foc Tac Temple (Rua do Almirante Sérgio) is a community temple built by the residents of Ha Wan (Barra District), with a shop on the right and a public hall at the back for the residents to hold meetings. Being a single-bay, single-hall traditional Chinese building, Foc Tac Temple (Rua do Almirante Sérgio) is the only temple in Macao integrated alongside a sequence of street arcades.

In 1906, the two side lanes, backyard and shop space of the temple were used for educational purposes and there Tou Shui Wan founded the Tou Shui Wan traditional private school. After the 1911 Revolution, the school became the Shui Wan School with two floors, six classrooms, a library and a playground. It was later passed down to Tou's son, Tou Chun Wing, and his grandson, Tou Kun, both of whom succeeded as the principal. Shui Wan School offered free primary education to poor children, helping them to improve their lives through knowledge. In 1989, Shui Wan School was renamed Ha Van Fong Chong School, managed by the Neighborhood Mutual Aid Association until 2007, when the school was closed.

During the late 19th and early 20th century, traditional private Chinese schools in Macao were called “Xueshu”, often located near temples or ancestral halls. With the abolition of the imperial examination and the end of the Qing dynasty, these schools tried to modernize. The Tou Shui Wan traditional private School evolved into Shui Wan School, focusing on the students' ability to answer questions, analyse and feedback, infer and generalise, and taught subjects like Chinese, English, and Mathematics. In 1989, the school completed its historical mission in the Barra district, reflecting a century of privately-run Chinese education in Macao.
