When the Portuguese settled in Macao in the mid-16th century, Macao rapidly emerged as a transit port for international trade, from where Chinese silk, porcelain and other goods were exported to Japan, India, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas. The Maritime Silk Road shaped the cityscape of Macao, which is still clearly visible in the traces of its urban space and architectural relics, and spiritual and cultural life today. The city has a diversity of Maritime Silk Road heritage, including sea gods worshipping and coastal defense structures, as well as relics of temples, churches and cemeteries born from cultural exchanges along the sea route. Now, let's appreciate the prosperity and cultural influence of Macao as an important node on the Maritime Silk Road through a tour of the 16 historic sites of the Maritime Silk Road Historic Trail.
