Formerly called Yu Yuen (Pleasure Garden), the gardens dates back to 1870 when the wealthy Chinese merchant Lou Wa Sio purchased the land and his eldest son, Lou Lim Iok, appointed a designer to turn the area into a beautiful Chinese park fashioned in the style of Suzhou. Since Lou Wa Sio was the ninth son of his family, people also called it Lou Kau Gardens (kau being the Chinese word for “nine”). Dr. Sun Yat Sen visited the house in May 1912, where he met with Chinese and Portuguese dignitaries. The house was sold after Lou Wa Sio and Lou Lim Iok died, and following purchase by the government, the whole area was renovated. Renamed Lou Lim Iok Gardens, this space was opened to the public in 1974.
