The temple was built in 1845 based on the shape of a natural cave. The local fishermen raised funds to build a temple there in 1859 and reconstructed it in 1864. Sam Po, who is worshipped in the temple, is said to be the third sister of Goddess Tin Hau (Goddess of Heaven). Sam Po was first known for helping people to defeat the pirates and was very much respected by the fishermen.
Architectural characteristics:
The temple is built on a huge rock, immersed completely within the temple. The rock is a sacrificial stone in which a shrine was carved. The exterior of the temple is of traditional South China architecture style – the calligraphy and paintings, coloured drawings and sculptures under the roof tiles in front of the door, double-leaf doors painted in brown, and the brick walls and tiled roofs of the five horizontal halls – reflect the artistic skills of the region.
