The 14th Chinese Academic Conference on Vernacular Architecture

A country’s culture is best presented by its vernacular housing. In order to glorify and study the culture of Chinese vernacular architecture, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government and the Architecture Committee of the Chinese Vernacular Architecture Research Association has jointly organized the 14th Chinese Academic Conference on Vernacular Architecture, to be held on September 24 and 25 at the Institute for Tourism Studies in Macao. With “Chinese Vernacular Architecture and Its Substantial Development” as its theme, the Conference is aimed at investigating the conservation and development of vernacular architecture.

Since 1998, the Chinese Academic Conference on Vernacular Architecture has been held in different places including Beijing, Kunming, Wenzhou, Chongqing, Urumqi and Hong Kong. It has gained substantial achievements in academic research and in advancing investigations and conservations of Chinese vernacular architecture. Macao has a historical wealth of great value that made possible specific conditions for the development of its vernacular architecture. It is believed that the holding of the 14th Chinese Academic Conference on Vernacular Architecture in Macao will foster the protection and re-use of Macao’s vernacular architecture. The Conference will also serve as a significant reference in keeping the balance between urban development and heritage conservation.

The organizers have invited over a hundred professors and postgraduates from renowned universities and scientific research institutions and a number of related administrative officers from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao to attend the conference and have received around 80 papers on the topic. During the Conference, experts and scholars will present their reports, which include “Concrete Challenges Associated with the Traditional Methods of Conservation” by Prof. Zhu Liangwen of the Department of Architecture at Kunming Polytechnic University, “The Conservation, Renovation and Development of Urban Areas of Historical Value” by Prof. Ye Zurun of the Department of Architecture at Beijing Institute for Architecture and Civil Engineering, “New Investigations in the Creation of Vernacular Architecture” by Prof. Lu Qi of the School of Architecture at Huanan University of Science and Technology and “Comparative Study on Different Types of Vernacular Architecture in the Fujian and Taiwan” by Prof. Dai Zhijian of the Department of Architecture at Xiamen University.

There will be group discussions on different issues, such as the characteristics of different vernacular architectures, their cultures and the implementation of measures of conservation. The Conference will be lead in Mandarin, with a discussion session for public participation.

The Conference will be held on September 24 and 25 from 9am to 6pm in the auditoriums of the Inspiration Building and the Team Building at the Institute for Tourism Studies. Free admission. All are welcome. For more information, please telephone 3996699 or visit the Culture Affairs Bureau’s website:
