    Historical Archives of Macao celebrates
    China Cultural Heritage Day and International Archives Day

    The Historical Archives of Macao of the Cultural Affairs Bureau is holding a series of activities from June 9 (this Saturday) to celebrate the China Cultural Heritage Day and International Archives Day. Members of the public are welcome to participate. The activities include an archival exhibition titled "Witness to Macao History – Chan Tai Pak’s Recollections of over Half a Century", thematic lectures, a workshop on record preservation and conservation and a workshop on oral history.

    Entitled "Witness to Macao History – Chan Tai Pak’s Recollections of over Half a Century", the exhibition presents oral historical material and precious documents and records donated by senior journalist Mr Chan Tai Pak. Also on display are records, images and photographs from the collection of the Historical Archives of Macao, as well as treasured documentation by courtesy of the Macao Museum, specialists and scholars. A number of items on display dates back to the 1930s, including materials about Mr Chan's participation in the Macau Four Circles for Disaster Relief Association, the Association’s anti-Japanese and national salvation movements, the activities of the Association's Home Country Service Regiment, the development of news industry of Macao and the life experience of Mr Chan in over half a century. The exhibition comprises four thematic sections: Macao during the Sino-Japanese war - social, economic, political and military situation, the Macau Four Circles for Disaster Relief Association and its Home Country Service Regiments, newspaper industry of Macao and Chan's researches, publications and insights on well-being and health.
    The exhibition is open from June 9 until August 12, daily from 10am to 6pm (closed on June 23 to June 25). To tie in with the exhibition, the Historical Archives of Macao is holding a thematic lecture from 3pm to 5pm on four Sundays, namely June 17, July 8, July 15 and July 29.

    On June 9 and 10, in conjunction with the exhibition, the Archives is conducting a workshop on record preservation and conservation. Participants can have the opportunity to try the skills applied in the protection of Macao's documentary heritage and learn the techniques used in the conservation of archival records and ordinary paper documents.  Microscopes and magnifiers are provided to enable participants to study closely the fibre contained in various papers and to analyse handwriting and print fonts.  This content-rich workshop also includes a course on making a simple photo frame. The workshop is opened from 12 noon to 6pm on June 9 and from 10am to 6pm on June 10. In addition, to enhance public knowledge of oral history and improve communications between oral historians in Macao and other parts of the world, the Historical Archives of Macao has invited Mr Pitt Kuan Wah, former director of National Archives of Singapore, to chair a workshop on oral history on June 16.  Ms Pauline Choi Pui Leng and Dr Vincent Ho Wai Kit will also be in attendance to share local experiences.
