Built in 1860, the building was named after the King of Portugal, D. Pedro V, who reigned from 1853 to 1861. This was the first western-style theatre in China. The building maintains to our days its role as one of the most important cultural landmarks in the context of the local Macanese community, serving as a special venue for important public events and celebrations.
The building was designed by Macanese Pedro Germano Marques and is neo-classic in style. In 1873, the building’s façade was redesigned by the Baron of Cercal to integrate a more sophisticated front portico. The building has a ballroom which opens onto a circular auditorium with a horse-shoe shaped balcony, altogether having a total capacity of 276 seats. During special events in the past, the auditorium could be converted into a banquet hall by temporarily removing the seating area for table setup.
