St. Raphael Hospital was established in 1569 by the Bishop, D. Belchior Carneiro, and was administrated by the Holy House of Mercy. The locals called it the “I Yan Miu” (Temple of Cures). Later, it was subjected to several reconstructions and expansions with its present appearance dating back to its last reconstruction in 1939. St. Raphael’s Hospital was the first western-style hospital established in Asia and it was from here that smallpox vaccinations were introduced into China. This building is currently the Portuguese Consulate General.
