Built in 1874, this building designed by Italian Architect Cassuto was constructed to accommodate an Indian regiment from Goa appointed to reinforce Macao’s police force. The Moorish Barracks is a clear reminder of Macao’s close links with Goa and their joint rank as sister cities in the context of the Old Portuguese maritime routes. The Moorish Barracks is a brick and stone structure neo-classic structure with Islamic architectural influences. The building stands on a raised granite platform above the street level and used to have direct view towards the riverside, allowing authorities to monitor the flow of boats in and out of the Inner Harbour. Spacious 4-metre-wide verandas with pointed arches run along all sides of the building, except the one facing Barra Hill. This arched gallery enables a good view of the surrounding area and provides an efficient solution for the tropical climate of Macao. Since 1905, the building has been used as the headquarters of the Harbour Authority.
