First established by Spanish Augustinian priests in 1591, this church maintains the tradition of organizing one of the most popular processions through the city, the Way of the Cross’s Procession, which attracts thousands of devotees. Its present-day configuration dates back to 1874. St. Augustine’s Church has a simple main façade typical of a neo-classic style, which contrasts with the more elaborate decoration of the interior nave, high-choir and sacristy. It has a Basilican plan layout, characterized by a rectilinear plan with two rows of columns semi-partitioning the nave from the side aisles and a main altar at the end. Inside the church, above the main entrance there is a high-choir that extends its gallery to the side walls, forming a narrow balcony that has a similar design to that of St. Dominic’s Church.
