MM038-Foc Tac Temple (Rua do Teatro)

Location: Macau
Category: Monuments
Address: Rua do Teatro

The Foc Tac Temple in Rua do Teatro was built before the year 1796, in the Qing Dynasty, being renovated in 1881 and in 1909, respectively in the Guangxu and Xuantong periods. The main altar is dedicated to "Tou Tei Kung", the Earth God, while a side altar has been consecrated to "Tou Tei Po", the Earth Goddess, which is very rare situation in Macao.

Architectural characteristics:
The architectural style and interior design of the Foc Tac Temple reveals that the building was originally planned as a place for worshipping the Earth God and conducting ceremonies in his honour. Given its initial purpose, this temple differs from other Foc Tac Temples in Macao, which began as outdoor shrines, and gradually became more complete worshipping places.
