Intangible Cultural Heritage

Woodwork – Religious Figure Carving

In order to act accordingly in our nation’s spirit of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage and fostering brilliant folk arts, as well as to fulfill China’s duty after joining the UNESCO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Macao SAR Government has officially ratified the convention on 20th September 2006 and thus activated the safeguarding procedure for the intangible cultural heritage in Macao. As a traditional craft, the religious figure carving has had its art handed down from generation to generation for almost a hundred years without interruption. Having experienced various phases of development, and preserved and followed a brilliant woodcarving tradition in our country till the present day, it is an intangible cultural heritage that truly deserves our special attention and protection.
