This area was located in the inner harbour and was formerly surrounded by. 19th century Chinese paintings show small bridges linking into it. The square was named after Governor José Maria da Ponte e Horta, who governed Macao from 1866 to 1868. In past years, this area was used for anchoring boats and a nearby warehouse was used for storing opium.
