After drying out the swamps in the late 19th century, some fine two-storey neoclassical houses and schools were built in this area in the early 20th century. Nowadays, most of the buildings are no longer residential: they include a health centre, the Macao Central Library, the Historical Archives, the Macao Ricci Institute. The Macao government has restored the buildings a number of times.
